Grooming in dogs with short hair is not necessary to a large extent, but it helps the dog to feel more comfortable. We know healthy dogs that were 15 years old and only got their fur brushed and cleaned once a year. However, it is important to regularly check the fur for parasites and diseases and this is a good option as part of fur care. The fur density,, fur change according to the season and age and breed-related hair loss have an impact on the maintenance effort. Some short-haired dogs only need to be brushed every few months, others should be brushed daily. Many short-haired dog breeds with smooth fur have a slow-regenerating skin flora, so these dogs should rarely be bathed. There is a suitable coat care for every short hair type that can prevent skin diseases at an early stage.
Grooming by fur type
The fur of all dog breeds can be single or multi-layered. It doesn't matter whether the dog has long or short hair. Single-layer dog fur consists only of top coat and has no underwool layer. Two-layer fur consists of top coat and undercoat. Breeds with two layers of fur are, for example, golden retrievers or labradors. Both the top coat and the undercoat gradually die in the cycle of changing the dogs' hair. The dead hair should then be removed promptly. If the change of coat is due in late spring dog, then you should often use the appropriate fur brush or fur comb over the next few weeks. Trimmers and clippers should not be used when changing fur, as they not only remove the dead hair, but also cut off healthy, re-grown top hair.
Grooming for short-haired dogs
To change the coat in late spring, you should often brush the entire coat with a coat brush or coat comb for short-haired dog breeds with two-layer coat in the following weeks. The coat of dog breeds with a single-layer coat (only top coat) protects the sensitive dog skin underneath - the coat should not be shortened too much, otherwise the dog is at risk of sunburn in summer and hypothermia very quickly. With suitable brushes, the fur can be groomed felt-free. Your fur build-up can even consist of three layers, if an intermediate skin develops in addition to the undercoat and top coat. A few dog breeds with particularly thick fur can develop a third layer of hair between the top coat and the lower coat. Such fur should be brushed at least weekly so as not to become matted.
You should have a fur brush and comb for every dog. Plastic bristles or combs made of plastic cause an electrostatic charge, natural bristles or coated wire bristles are more suitable for dog-friendly fur care. A rounded pair of fur scissors is needed to cut hair in hard-to-reach areas such as the genitals or in your dog's ears and paws. For thick undercoat, we recommend raking off the felt and underwool brush. The underwool brush ensures a nice shine of the fur. If your dog has particularly heavy hair, you can use the FURminator, which removes dead hair, skin particles and undercoat without damaging the outer coat.
Grooming and diseases
Sometimes bite wounds go undetected after a visit to the dog playground and quickly develop into foci of infection. Crusts, ticks, fleas, open, bald or even inflamed areas of skin are quickly discovered as part of fur care and can then be treated accordingly.
Equipment for grooming at home
- Trimmer and trim knife for dogs with a lot of undercoat
- fur brush
- Fellkamm
- De-felting or thinning scissors for particularly dense fur
- Weeder for bristly fur
- Soft brushes for typical hunting and hound dogs.
- Furminator for depilation in different sizes to match the dog
- Matched dog shampoos suitable for the short hair type
- Grooming in the rain
In heavy rain, dry your dog well after a walk. The fur and the fur-free areas on the abdomen, ears, paws and armpits should be dried. This often prevents diseases such as the common cold, skin diseases and fungal infections. Bathing after a rain walker is not necessary and usually not useful.
Bathing for grooming
Dogs with short fur should rarely be bathed or showered warm. With each bath and shower, the dog's fur loses its fat protection layer that surrounds the dog's hair. Without appropriate treatment after bathing, short-haired dogs quickly dry out the dog's skin, which would otherwise be protected by a layer of talc. Special shampoos suitable for the type of dog fur enable a more tolerable bathing. Basically, you should rather do without it.
The dog fur
Dog skin is the skin of dogs with a hair density of 50 to 400 hairs per square centimeter. With a lower hair density, it is considered to be hairless skin as with naked dogs. If there is more hair with more than 400 hairs per square centimeter of other mammals, the skin is called fur. The fur is formed by the top hair (upper hair) and the wool hair (under wool). The fur protects the skin and stores heat. Many dogs actively adapt their hair to the weather conditions by changing their fur. The coat color originally served as a camouflage for the wolves, but also as a warning signal for some other animal species. The change of fur can be accompanied by a change in the color of the fur.
Hi zusammen,
